Colosseum

Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. It's constructions began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir Titus.

The Colosseum is located in the centre of the capital city of Italy, Rome. The Colosseum is easily accessible from anywhere in the city. Fiumicino Airport is at a distance of around 31 km from the Colosseum. The Rome Metro has a stop at the Colosseum on the B line. One tram stop and two bus stops are near the monument.

The Colosseum could hold estimatedly between 50.000 and 80.000 spectators, having an average spectators of some 65.000. The Colosseum was used for gladiator contest and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. it was later reused for such puposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. It is one of rome's most popular touris attractions and has links to the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.

The best time to visit the Colosseum are in Spring and Autumn, when weather in Rome is more pleasant, and the city is much less crowded. Summer in Rome is generally hot and crowded, with long lines at the Colosseum so Summer is not the time to recommend if you wanted to visit here.
